Small intervention – Great precision – Results that last for years!
Almost everybody remembers their first tooth filling. “Everybody” in this case is not an exaggeration, according to a domestic survey from the beginning of the 2000s, by 12 years of age, children have close to 4 teeth with decay or fillings in average. Naturally this is not very delightful data. We must also do something to improve on the statistics.
Tooth decay and its signs
Our teeth are covered on the outside by a very hard and resistant material, the tooth enamel, protecting the significantly more vulnerable layer underneath called dentin. We talk about tooth decay when acids produced by bacteria living in our mouth cavity damage the tooth enamel, which finally results in the formation of tooth cavities and is irreversible.
A prophylactic symptom to tooth decay can be the appearance of chalk white spots on the tooth surface. This is not yet grounds for concern, the process can be reversed by cleaning with a proper technique, frequency and a well-chosen toothpaste.
In advanced phases dark discolorations show on the hard-to-clean tooth surfaces, for example in the chewing surfaces’ deep ridges, the dental cervix (“neck of tooth”), or around the gaps between the teeth, later even developing into visible, palpable cavities in the hard tissues of the tooth. Symptoms of tooth decay can be the sensitivity of teeth -even pain when consuming candy- but in many cases this problem develops completely without symptoms.
Treatment of tooth decay with aesthetic filling
The good news is, as long as it does not affect the deepest layers of the tooth, tooth decay can be treated easily and quickly.
- Match perfectly in color to natural teeth
- Its construction models the form, curveture and ridges of the natural tooth, thus it is practically indiscernible both for patients and external observers
- Dental sensitivity usually ceases immediately (minimal discomfort may occur in case of deep fillings for some weeks after the treatment)
- Long-lasting, in general it is not necessary to have them replaced more often than 5 years in between
- A single dental appointment is sufficient for their completion
- Thanks to the gentle technology, they can be completed painlessly even for children.
What happens if no filling is applied to a tooth with decay?
The natural property of tooth decay is that left untreated, with time it spreads within the tooth. The rate of this is different between individuals and greatly depends on dental cleaning habits. If the decay reaches the nerve-filled pulp cavity within the tooth, restoration cannot be achieved simply by aesthetic filling, a root canal has to be performed first. This stage usually comes with serious pain and other unpleasant symptoms, therefore it is not worth putting it off: if you experience signs of tooth decay, please do not hesitate to put your trust into our practice, so we may help you in time!
