Periodontics

_

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry focusing on the diagnostics and treatment of gum diseases.
More than 70% of the adult population will experience some form of gum disease during their life. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.

Many believe that gum diseases are not curable, but this is false information. However, the treatment takes time and a high level of cooperation between patient and dentist to achieve success.

Our dental practice is fully prepared for periodontal treatments with our equipment and educational background.

What is a periodontal disease?

_

It is an inflammation of the supporting structures of our teeth that is caused by the immune reaction to the bacteria found in dental plaque.

What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?

_
  • Swollen and painful gums
  • Bleeding spontaneously or during brushing
  • Receding gum line at the tooth necks
  • Changes in the position or alignment of the teeth
  • Smelly breaths
  • Mobile teeth

If you’ve experienced any of the above symptoms more than once, please get in touch with our clinic so we can help you stop the disease as early as possible. Early detection of gum diseases usually requires less invasive treatment under a shorter period of shorter time.

What can I do to avoid developing periodontal disease?

_

There are 4 main causes of developing periodontal disease. Prevention needs to focus on these areas. If you follow a few simple instructions, you have a very good chance to avoid periodontal problems.

Local hygiene and maintenance
Prevention: maintaining proper oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly (at least once a year).

General health
Based on a number of research done by immunologists, it seems very likely that immune cells may also be responsible for periodontal conditions (source: Prof. Kawai, Forsythe Institute, USA). Many research indicates that there may be a connection between periodontal disease and certain chronic illnesses. For example, diabetes is a risk factor in gum diseases and vica versa, having periodontitis may worsen the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. Periodontal diseases increase the risk of having a stroke, a cardiac arrest or a premature birth. This is caused by a constant bacterial presence in the bloodstream. These consequences are easier to avoid if periodontal diseases are detected at an early stage.

Healthy lifestyle
Quitting smoking and moderate alcohol consumption lowers the risk of developing a gum disease by 80%. Doing regular exercises and living a stress-free life may also help a lot.

Eating habits
Recent studies show that antioxidants are able to protect and regenerate living tissues. Fresh fruits and vegetables (mainly dark coloured berries) are good sources of antioxidants. Consume food that is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Q10 coenzyme and flavonoids.

Treatment of periodontitis

_

As always, an extensive consultation is necessary to diagnose periodontal problems. This includes interviewing the patient about their hygiene routines, eating habits, smoking or alcohol consumption and existing illnesses. This is followed by taking a panoramic X-Ray and oral examinations.

What does the oral examination include?

_
  • Checking the contour and colour and bleeding of the gums
  • Checking the presence of plaque and tartar in the mouth
  • Measuring pocket depth using a special probe
  • Checking the mobility of the teeth

Taking all these into consideration, we class the teeth into 3 categories:

  • The one we can keep for sure
  • The ones we can save
  • The ones that need to come out for sure.

After the examination, your treatment plan will be made that includes all the necessary periodontal procedures we suggest and a plan to replace the teeth that may need to be extracted. A periodontal treatment plan always requires several visits to your dentist to keep an eye on your oral hygiene. You have a huge role in the success of the treatments, as the everyday oral hygiene routine is a must during and after your active treatment. After your treatment plan is completed, you are required to return for annual checkups, until you prove to be symptom-free for 3 consecutive checkups.

We look forward to seeing you in our practice!
